Professor Writes Global Business Column
C. Gopinath, a professor of Strategy and International Business in the Sawyer Business School, has been a regular global business columnist for Hindu Business Line since 1996. In his latest bi-monthly article, “Visionary leadership in short supply,” Gopinath discusses key economic challenges facing today’s global leaders.
He notes that the United States is amidst a slow growth period as it struggles to create new employment opportunities. “People are not spending money on goods and services, as many either still do not have jobs, or are not certain of their jobs continuing, or are in jobs that are paying less than what they were earning previously,” he writes.
He also argues that the income gap continues to widen, largely because many middle-class positions have gone overseas.
According to Gopinath, global businesses leaders need to be innovative and capable of managing change. He calls for “leaders with integrity who paint a vision of the future and are prepared to explain the hard choices to their followers.”
Gopinath earned his PhD is from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He completed graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Vivekananda College in Chennai.
Gopinath is also the editor of the Journal of Knowledge Globalization, and his research has been published in several academic journals. He has written several books, including Globalization: A Multidimensional System and Strategize! Experiential exercises in strategic management.
