Divas to take the Suffolk Stage

Since the opening of the Modern Theatre, Suffolk University students have had many opportunities to intern and perform with professional theatre companies. When the Modern hosts Intermezzo, New England’s chamber opera series, this month, students can add “opera” to their collective repertoire.

Intermezzo’s The Diva Monologues is a collection of one-act operas about women in history who have struggled to define their identities.

Two students, Sara Pardo and Gillian Gordon, will perform walk-on roles. Two other students will work behind the scenes: Amanda Arruda as the assistant stage manager and Angela Plante as a technical assistant. Alumnus Ryan Began ’11 will assist the director.

About The Diva Monologues

  • In At the Statue of Venus, a woman waits to meet a blind date while standing next to a statue of Venus in a museum, deliberating the many plusses and minuses of dating in the modern age, written by Jake Heggie and libretto by Terrence McNally.
  • The Stronger is an adaptation of August Strindberg’s short play about jealousy and power, by Hugo Weisgall
  • Miss Haversham’s Wedding Night, by Dominick Argento, is based on the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations.

The show performs on Saturday, September 15 at 8pm and Sunday, September 16 at 4pm. For tickets and more information, visit www.intermezzo-opera.org.
