The Suffolk University Theatre Department presents Sean Graney’s new adaptation of Sophocles’ seven plays, These Seven Sicknesses, directed by Wesley Savick, from Nov. 16-18 at the Modern Theatre.
Hilarious. Terrifying. Primal. These words describe Graney’s adaptation of the Sophocles tragedies Oedipus, In Trachis, Philoktetes, In Colonus, Ajax, Elektra, and Antigone. These Seven Sicknesses recently completed a critically-acclaimed run at The Flea Theater in New York City. “Genuinely stirring feats of theatricality…the stunningly large company’s sheer exuberance and conviction keep the event buoyant and alive,” The New Yorker said of the New York production.
In this ambitious, marathon production, 35 student actors perform* all seven plays in a fast-moving, four-hour event, complete with a vegetarian dinner and dessert served during intermission. The Suffolk University Theatre Department is proud to be the first to bring this innovative new work to the Boston stage.
These Seven Sicknesses opens Friday, Nov. 16, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. About the artists
Savick is a playwright, director and actor with experience in more than 80 professional productions of new works. Most recently, his play Car Talk: The Musical!!! received an extended run due to popular demand at the Central Square Theater. He is a professor of Theatre at Suffolk University.
Graney is the founding director of The Hypocrites, a Chicago theater company. As a playwright, Sean has received productions of his play The 4th Graders Present an Unnamed Love-Suicide at 59E59; Autophagy at the Drama League Director’s Fest in 2007; Porno at the side project in Chicago; as well as several adaptations and short plays.
Associate Directors and Suffolk alumni Ryan Began and Arissara Chounchaisit will direct two of the seven plays.
The scenic designer on the production is Richard W. Chambers who is the recipient of two Elliot Norton Awards and three Independent Reviewers of New England awards. He has designed more than 150 productions in the Northeast. Chambers is an associate professor of Theatre at Suffolk University.
The design team also includes Fabian Aguilar, costume designer; Steven McIntosh, lighting designer; and Matt Griffin, sound designer.

This is the third season for the Modern Theatre at Suffolk University, the newest performance space in the Washington Street Theater District. The grand facade of the historic theater, Boston’s first designed specifically for showing movies, was painstakingly restored and reconstructed as part of the Modern Theatre and residence hall development. Inside, an intimate jewel-box theater showcases central design elements that are a modernization of some of the most distinctive historic features of the 1914 theater. The state-of-the-art, 185-seat venue is ideal for live performances, conversations, readings and film screenings and will promote excellence and innovation through all of its programming.
