With Alternative Spring Break on the horizon, Service Scholar Lina Rodriguez is even busier than the usual involved student. She is handling the logistics for 10 Alternative Spring Break trips, planning travel, accommodations, and contacts for more than 120 students and facilitators who will volunteer on service projects ranging from building affordable housing to planting trees.

Rodriguez, a criminal justice major who also is involved in student government, the Suffolk University Hispanic Association and the Wicked Dance Team, got involved with the S.O.U.L.S. Community Service and Service Learning Center as a freshman after she traveled to Denver to work on a Habitat for Humanity project through Alternative Spring Break.

“S.O.U.L.S. completely shaped my college experience,” said Rodriguez. "After going on ASB I became involved with the service learning office and applied for the scholar position.”

This is Rodriguez’s second year planning the Alternative Spring Break trips, a job that has grown in scope with the addition of two trips since last year.

She works with the encouragement of Service Learning Director Carolina Garcia and Assistant Director Tim Albers.

“Tim is always inspiring me to do different things, while Carolina opens the door for me to participate in different community service opportunities,” said Rodriguez.

The most important thing that people should know about Rodriguez's involvement with S.O.U.LS.: “I do it with a passion and will do it until the day I graduate.”
