Senior Breaks GNAC Records for Women's Soccer
Senior Leslie Hayden became the all-time leading goal scorer among Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer players on Oct. 15 when she converted a penalty kick to net her 69th career goal in the 56th minute of the contest.
Hayden also set the mark for goals scored in conference regular-season games during the Rams' 4-0 victory over Norwich University, tallying her 17th goal of the season in the contest's fifth minute.
With three games remaining in the season, Hayden had scored 18 goals in GNAC play, and her 40 points also lead the league. She has scored 11 goals in the Rams past four contests.
This is the third time in her career that Hayden has reached the 40-point plateau.
In 60 career games played, Hayden's 69 goals and 27 assists total for 165 points -- the fifth best in GNAC history, while her 2.75-points-per-game total is the second best in GNAC history.
The conference's previous career scoring record of 68 was set by Patrice Merendina, who played for Johnson & Wales University from 1999-2002, and the regular-season scoring record had been held by Nicole Zielinski, who played for Simmons College from 2003-2006.
Hayden has been recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference as an all-conference selection in all three of her completed seasons at Suffolk University. In 2008 she was named GNAC Rookie of the Year. As a freshman and sophomore she was also named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team, an honor that was voted by her teammates. She also has served as a team captain the past three seasons.
