Mona Al-Amin Appreciates Classroom Diversity

Professor Mona Al-Amin, who joined Suffolk’s Healthcare Programs in July, is teaching Health Systems I and Organizational Behavior in Healthcare, two core requirements for the Master of Health Administration degree. (Health Systems I is also required for the MBA/Health degree.)

Al-Amin is also co-teaching Applied Research Methods for Healthcare Management, another core requirement, with Professor Rivard. The goal of the class is “to provide students with both qualitative and quantitative research skills so they will be able to make decisions supported by data and interpret what research findings others present to them,” Al-Amin said. Students will learn how to interpret surveys, statistics, and other trends in the industry.

Al-Amin is looking forward to working alongside the diverse and accomplished Healthcare Programs faculty members. The professors have varied industry experience in all realms of healthcare, ranging from hospital and ambulatory care management to healthcare law.

“The leadership of the department is just amazing,” Al-Amin said, adding that she was impressed with Operating Director of Healthcare Programs Richard Gregg’s determination to make it the best program in the area.

Al-Amin became interested in teaching while she was pursuing her Master of Public Health degree at the College of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut in Lebanon. She was “driven to learn more about healthcare and really generate knowledge to help the industry,” she said. She went on to earn her PhD in Business Administration with a focus on risk, insurance, and healthcare management at the Fox School of Business, Temple University, in Philadelphia.

As a professor, Al-Amin not only shares her knowledge with her students, but she also gains new perspectives from them. “I love interacting with the students and learning what they think. They always give you a different view,” she said.

Suffolk’s Healthcare Programs attract a diverse student body. There is a mix of full- and part-time students from many parts of the world. “It makes the classes rich, and makes my classes more challenging, but at the same time, more interesting,” Al-Amin said.

Al-Amin’s main goal is to help prepare her students for successful careers. “We’re their mentors, and we’re here to support them,” she said. When alumni come back to visit, it is gratifying to see “how thankful they are for the things we taught them,” she said.

Prior to joining Suffolk, Al-Amin served as an assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Research, Management, and Policy, College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida in Gainesville. She also taught at Temple University.
