The Suffolk University baseball team earned 15 postseason awards from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the 2010 season. The Rams finished with the best record in regular season play with a 13-1 standing, but fell to the St. Joseph’s College Monks in the GNAC Tournament.

Head Coach Cary McConnell took home his fifth GNAC Coach of the Year Award. McConnell who is in his 15th season as skipper of the Rams had taken Suffolk to four NCAA Tournaments and led his team to a GNAC regular season top finish for the sixth time in ten tries in 2010.

Freshman Jhonneris Mendez was voted GNAC Rookie of the Year. Mendez who took over the starting third base job hit .389 with four home runs and 29 RBI. His four home runs were a team-best. Mendez hit safely in 21 out of 26 games this season for the Rams and had a 12-game hitting streak at one point in the season. Mendez also appeared in 11 games on the mound for Suffolk with a 3-2 record to go along with four saves. Mendez had two saves in the GNAC Tournament.

All-Conference selections

Senior Bobby Barrett was a first-team selection as a catcher. Barrett finished the 2010 season as the GNAC’s leading hitter with a .470 average heading into the tournament on May 1 and 2. Barrett leads the team in hits (55), doubles (12), triples (6) and RBI (35).He was also named to the GNAC All-Tournament team as he had a pair of RBI in the 7-4 victory over Johnson & Wales on May 1.

Senior Marc Doyle was a first-team selection as a pitcher, and was also a second team selection at first base. Doyle has been dominant on the mound posting a 5-1 record with a 0.96 ERA in 38 innings pitched. Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week three times this season, Doyle had a 31 scoreless innings streak snapped in the 5-2 win over Emerson in the opening game of the GNAC Tournament. It was the first earned run Doyle allowed in conference play this season as he boasted a 4-0 record in four starts. Doyle also hit .322 this season as Suffolk’s cleanup hitter with 22 RBI. He had a 20-game hitting streak earlier in the year.

Junior Andrew Babb was a first-team selection as an outfielder. Babb boasts a .387 average with three home runs and 31 RBI. During the last week of the regular season, Babb caught fire going 17-for-25 with 13 RBI in six games. The Suffolk right fielder was also named to the GNAC All-Tournament team as he was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI in the Championship game on May 2. He was the tough luck loser on the mound, going the distance allowing five runs on nine hits.

Senior Rory Gentile was a first-team selection as an outfielder. The Suffolk leadoff hitter led the team in walks with 13 doubles and also had a team best 19 walks on the season. He was also tied for the team lead with 13 stolen bases. Gentile also had 80 putouts on the year patrolling center field for the Rams.

Sophomore Mark Addesa was a second-team selection at shortstop. Addesa hit .288 for the Rams with 22 RBI on 34 hits. Named GNAC Tournament MVP in 2009, Addesa started all 36 games for Suffolk this season. Addesa hit .390 (16-for-41) in 14 GNAC games this season.

Freshman Chris Stanley was a third-team selection as an infielder. Stanley batted .345 with one home run and 28 RBI. Stanley collected 12 multiple hit games this season and was 8-for-17 in the tournament on May 1 and 2. Stanley has 39 hits this season, including a walk-off single in extra innings to lead to Rams to an 8-7 victory over Ripon College on March 17.

Junior Nick Travelyn was a third-team selection as an outfielder. Travelyn hit .300 with 14 RBI and 13 extra base hits this season. His 11 stolen bases are second most on the team.

Junior Alex Torres was a third-team selection as a pitcher. Torres is 4-3 with a 4.96 ERA in 45 1/3 innings pitched. He was named GNAC Pitcher of the Week on March 26 after retiring the first 19 batters he faced in a 2-0 win over Johnson & Wales. In four conference starts this year Torres was 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA, all complete game efforts.

Freshman Matt Sliney was named to the GNAC All-Tournament team for his work in the 7-4 win over Johnson & Wales on May 1. Sliney went eight innings allowing four runs, to help the Rams stave off elimination.
