John Berg Given Career Achievement Award

John Berg, a Suffolk University professor of government, will be awarded the Charles A. McCoy Career Achievement Award from the New Political Science (NPS) Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA) at its annual meeting this September.

The distinction, awarded since 2001, honors Berg as a “progressive political scientist who has had a long career as a writer, teacher, and activist,” said an NPS announcement.

An active member, Berg served as NPS chair from 2001 to 2003 and as reviews editor of the journal New Political Science from 1998 to 2003.

The award also takes account of Berg’s scholarly work, most notably his 1994 book Unequal Struggle: Class, Gender, race and Power in US Congress, published by Westview.

“New Political Science goes back to the 1960s, when it struggled successfully to open up the political science profession…NPS has transformed the discipline, and I am proud to have played a part in it. To receive the McCoy Award means a lot to me,” said Berg.

As a section of the APSA, the NPS organizes a group of panels at each annual meeting held in Washington, D.C. The meeting and award ceremony this year, to be held Sept. 4, 2010, will include additional honors, such as a posthumous Special Lifetime Achievement Award to Howard Zinn, who was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the College of Arts and Sciences.
