Suffolk University is listed as one of the “Best National Universities” in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best Colleges rankings, and Suffolk had the nation’s fifth largest proportion of international students on campus during the 2015-16 academic year, which served as the basis for the report.

The University made the top level of the U.S. News national universities rankings, at number 188 among institutions offering a broad choice of undergraduate majors along with master’s and doctoral degrees. In the latest rankings, Suffolk moved to the Best National Universities list from the Regional University – North category, where it has been ranked in past years.

With international students making up 23 percent of its undergraduate enrollment, the University, which emphasizes global education and experience in its curriculum, ranked fifth in the nation among schools with the most international students.

“We are pleased that U.S. News has recognized the quality of a Suffolk education,” said Acting President Marisa Kelly. “Our first-tier ranking can be attributed to the excellence of our faculty and curriculum, as well as to the talented students who have chosen the intellectual, internship, and networking opportunities presented by Suffolk and its downtown Boston location.”

Suffolk offers undergraduate and advanced degree programs in more than 90 areas of study through its College of Arts & Sciences, Sawyer Business School and Law school. The University also offers more than a dozen dual-degree programs.

Among the attributes that led to Suffolk’s ranking were its small class size, with 42 percent of classes having fewer than 20 students and only 0.2 percent larger than 50 students.

The news magazine ranked more than 1,300 colleges and universities across the nation in its annual report, dividing the schools according to their Carnegie classifications and basing the rankings on data related to academic excellence.

Students’ Views of Suffolk

Suffolk also is included in The Princeton Review’s recently released 2017 edition of The Best 381 Colleges, an indication of the educational organization’s confidence that the University is one of the best institutions in the nation for undergraduate education. The Princeton Review also lists the University among the Best Northeastern in its “Region by Region” web report and features Suffolk as a Green College.

In its profile of Suffolk University, The Princeton Review quotes extensively from students, who note that the University offers a “wide selection of interesting majors” that give the “united, diverse mass of students” a “global perspective in a real-world, urban setting.”

The students say that professors are “very friendly” and that “class participation comes naturally because class size is so small and the professor knows your name.” Students characterize themselves as “friendly” saying that they “interact with one another regardless of where they are from.” They note that cultures and beliefs vary greatly, which is “definitely a part of what makes Suffolk so unique.”
