Softball Ends Season With GNAC Tournament Loss
Suffolk ended its 2007 softball season with a loss in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Play-in. The Rams, seeded 8th in the tourney, lost 6-5 to No. 5 seed Simmons.
The Rams finish the year with a 15-22 overall record, 10-12 in GNAC regular season games. Suffolk was tied for sixth in the GNAC standings, but was seeded eighth after head-to-head competition.
Simmons catcher Karyn Deptula collected three hits and scored two runs as fifth-seeded Simmons College edged eighth-seeded Suffolk University, 6-5, in the first game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball tournament on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Pine Manor College.
Suffolk (15-22) got on the board with a run in the first on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, MA). Simmons (18-15) tied the score in the home half of the inning when sophomore Sam Green delivered a single up the middle that plated Deptula.
The game stayed tied at one until the Sharks exploded for five runs in the fifth. Senior Joanna Donato capped the outburst with a two-out, two-run single just out of the second baseman’s reach that scored freshmen Kim Korenewsky and Leah Derderian. The Rams responded with four in their next at-bat. Senior Jackie Zwicker (South Easton, MA) lined an RBI single up the middle, while sophomore Marie Trainor (Winthrop, MA) scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Suffolk threatened in the top of the seventh when sophomore Kellie Hurlock (East Lyme, CT) doubled to right-center to lead off the frame, but could not score. The Shark’s Sammi Letizio, who has won her last six decisions on the mound, struck out junior Jenna Mourey (Rochester, NY), got Zwicker to foul out to third, and induced freshman Erin O’Donell (Groton, MA) to bounce out to short to end the game.
