Charles Giuliano Last Call: A Retrospective
More than 120 photographs selected from Charles Giuliano's long career as an arts critic and journalist will be shown at the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University gallery.
Charles Giuliano: Last Call, A Retrospective will be on view in the gallery, at 75 Arlington St. from May 18 through June 16, 2007. There will be a reception and retirement party for the artist from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
Giuliano has taught art history for the New England School of Art & Design for 25 years and was associated with Suffolk University's Humanities Department before the two institutions merged. He has run the exhibition program since the merger.
The exhibition will consist of a salon-style, dense cluster of 13-by-19-inch color and black-and-white photographs.
Arts critic
In the 1960s Giuliano wrote reviews for Arts Magazine. He was an editor of the underground paper The Avatar; art critic for Boston After Dark; arts and music writer for The Boston Herald; correspondent for Art News; and for more than 25 years served as an editor and columnist for Art New England. He now publishes the online magazines “Maverick Arts” and “Berkshire Fine Arts.”
Over the years he has been known for feisty often contentious coverage of all aspects of the arts, from fine arts, through jazz and rock, film, theatre and dance.
Celebrity images
Among the celebrity images included in the exhibit are Miles Davis, Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio, the Ramones, Mick Jagger, Stevie Nicks, and Rudolph Nureyev. There also are shots of local artists, gallerists and curators.
The exhibit has been curated and installed by James Manning, who will serve as acting director of the program.
