Women's Soccer Drops Opening Game

SOMERVILLE, Mass.-- Senior Laurel Saia (Holyoke, Mass.) and freshman Kaitlynn Fields (Stoneham, Mass.) each netted a goal and an assist to lead Lasell to a 5-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Dillboy Stadium.

Saia’s penalty kick conversion in the 39th minute gave the visiting Lasers (2-1, 1-0 Great Northeast) the only goal they would need and a 1-0 advantage at the break, and Lasell used three markers in a 4:34 span early after intermission to extend its lead to four. Freshman Olivia Tsakiris-Alston’s (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) unassisted tally in the 50th minute gave the visitors a 2-0 edge, while goals from Fields and freshman Jess Wainwright (Marlboro, Mass.) that came 1:41 apart made it 4-0 just 9:14 into the second half. Freshman Megan Moore (North Conway, N.H.) closed out the Laser scoring in the 68th minute with an unassisted marker, and the match was halted with 9:21 remaining due to lightning in the area.

Freshman Courtney Brothers (Woburn, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Lasell by making a pair of saves, while freshman Anna Hartmann (Strafford, N.H.) made 15 stops in net for the host Rams (0-1, 0-1 Great Northeast), as Suffolk made its collegiate varsity debut with the contest. The Lasers outshot the Rams by a 26-3 margin for the afternoon.

Suffolk heads across town on Tuesday evening for a Great Northeast match with Emmanuel that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Lasell hosts Wheelock in a non-league contest on Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Mass. beginning at 4:00 p.m.
