Women Score First Varsity Soccer Goal in Loss

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.-- Four different individuals netted goals to lead Johnson & Wales to a 4-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Pierce Stadium.

Senior Anevay Duffy (Pittsfield, N.H.) staked the host Wildcats (1-5, 1-1 Great Northeast) to a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest when she converted a feed from freshman Angela Cazzato (Rensselaer, N.Y.), and freshman Melissa Kmon (Coventry, R.I.) extended the Johnson & Wales lead to 2-0 with an unassisted marker just 6:34 later. Senior Jessica Thompson (Newburgh, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Bernacchio (West Hempstead, N.Y.) each added goals in the 56th and 80th minutes, respectively, to close out the hosts’ scoring on the afternoon, while sophomore Kalli MacKinnon (Boylston, Mass.) scored the first-ever goal in the short two-match varsity history of the visiting Rams (0-2, 0-2 Great Northeast) when she converted a penalty kick with 4:47 remaining.

Freshman Jennifer Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) made seven saves to pick up her first collegiate victory in goal for Johnson & Wales, while freshman Anna Hartmann (Strafford, N.H.) made 10 stops in net for Suffolk as the Wildcats outshot the Rams by a 24-14 margin for the contest.

Suffolk hosts Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast match on Wednesday afternoon at Dillboy Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales entertains St. Joseph’s (Conn.) in a Great Northeast outing on Wednesday afternoon at Pierce Stadium that also begins at 4:00 p.m.
