Robert Hass, former Poet Laureate of the United States, will visit classes and read from his work on Monday, Oct. 1. 

Hass’ books of poetry include Time and Materials: Poems 1997-2005, Field Guide, Praise, Human Wishes, and Sun Under Wood.

He also has published Twentieth Century Pleasures, a book of essays on poetry, and Now & Then, a collection of his Washington Post columns. Hass has translated many works of Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet, Czeslaw Milosz and has edited a number of poetry collections, including the 2001 edition of Best American Poetry.

While serving as Poet Laureate from 1995-1997, Hass, who is concerned with environmental issues, founded River of Words (ROW), which promotes environmental and arts education in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

Hass, a professor of English at University of California, Berkeley, received a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, was awarded the National Book Critics’ Circle Award in 1984 and 1997, and received the Yale Series of Younger Poets award in 1973.

His poetry reading will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at the C. Walsh Theatre, 55 Temple St., Boston.
