Men's Soccer Beats Mt. Ida In Overtime
SOMERVILLE, Mass.-- Junior Pierre-Yves N’Goran’s (Abibjan, Ivory Coast) goal 41 seconds into overtime lifted Suffolk to a 3-2 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Mount Ida Saturday afternoon at Dilboy Stadium.
N’Goran’s heroics forced the extra session and provided the game-winner for the host Rams (8-5, 5-4 Great Northeast), as he tied the score at 2-2 with 37 seconds remaining in regulation after converting feeds from senior Marco D’Andrea (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Celia (Hanson, Mass.) and then netted the game-winner in the first minute of overtime after taking a pass from D’Andrea at midfield and lofting a shot from 30 yards out from the right side to cap the Suffolk comeback.
After playing to a scoreless draw for the first 67 minutes of action, the two teams combined for four goals in the final 22-plus minutes of regulation, as the Rams grabbed a 1-0 edge in the 68th minute when D’Andrea converted feeds from Celia and sophomore Mario Dorado (Bay Islands, Fla.) for his sixth goal of the season. Junior Matt Gill (Winnefield, Kan.) evened matters for the visiting Mustangs (8-6-4, 4-4-1 Great Northeast) in the 72nd minute when he converted a rebound off senior Joe Kassoy’s (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot, and freshman Hayato Kanesaka (Old Tappan, N.J.) gave Mount Ida a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation when he took a pass from junior Carmelo Bello (Rocky Hill, Conn.), setting up N’Goran’s heroics in the last 1:08 of action.
Freshman Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) made six saves to pick up his seventh win of the season in goal for Suffolk, while junior Kevin DosSantos (Cumberland, R.I.) made five stops in net for Mount Ida as the Rams outshot the Mustangs by a 15-10 margin for the match.
