"Seriously Bent" Racks Up Another Victory

Seriously Bent, Suffolk University’s student improv troupe, has captured the 2009 Comedy Beanpot.

The four-day event, held at Improv Boston in Cambridge, brought together some of the top college improv teams in Massachusetts.

Suffolk’s student comedians topped Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the semi-finals, setting up a rematch from last year's Beanpot finals, when Seriously Bent also went up against Clark University's Pea Pod Squad.

The laugh rivals performed a series of four different short-form comedy structures and a seven-minute freestyle set.

The long form plays to the Suffolk troupe’s greatest strength, and the three judges gave Seriously Bent perfect scores for the seven-minute finale.

After more than six hours of competition, Seriously Bent was named 2009 Comedy Beanpot Tournament champion.

Seriously Bent, under the guidance of director Jeremy Brothers, is comprised of Mitch Manning, Nick Wilson, Nick Mandella, Trevor Livingston, Kelly Dooley, Alec Lawless, Corey O'Rourke, Christian Roberts, Courtney McMahon and Jonathon Curtiss.

In addition to the most recent victory, Seriously Bent has been the undefeated Improv Asylum College Smackdown Champions for the past four years and won the Boston Comedy Festival's College Improv Champions in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The group won the East Coast Regionals of the National College Improv Championship Tournament in 2008 and placed second in the national finals held in Chicago in November.
