New Faculty Profile Series
Dr. Ariel Markelevich brings a uniquely global perspective to the accounting department. Born in Chile and raised in Israel, Markelevich, who teaches Intro to Accounting, came to the U.S. a decade ago to pursue his PhD at City University of New York’s Baruch College.
He took advantage of his experience in Israel to study the impact of that country’s recent shift to the International Financial Reporting Standards. “The United States will adopt these reporting standards in the near future,” said Markelevich. “Israel adopted them in 2008 and I thought it would be important to anticipate the impact of these changes on U.S. businesses.”
Along with Department Chair Lewis Shaw, Markelevich studied what happened in Israel when companies changed the way they reported values. “Under the GAAP, you report the cost, but under the IFRS, you report the current market value,” he explains. “Because of the economic downturn, companies’ current market values have plummeted, particularly Israeli real estate companies.”
