Glory Days

The Suffolk baseball team has captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship title for the fourth straight season with to a 6-5 victory over Saint Joseph’s College of Maine on Sunday afternoon in Standish, Maine.

The blue and gold now qualify for the 2018 NCAA Division III national baseball tournament, which begins later in May. This is the eighth time in program history that the Rams will be going to the tournament.

Suffolk, at 24-16, was the top seed in the GNAC tournament, and St. Joseph’s (29-13) was the second-seeded team.

“The team showed a lot of resiliency and character throughout the season to get to this point after a sluggish start,” said Suffolk head baseball coach Anthony Del Prete, who has led the Rams to the GNAC title in each of his four seasons at the helm. “I’m really proud of our seniors to cap off their careers with four straight conference championships.”

Del Prete said that the three victories in the tournament showed the “highly competitive nature” of his group of student-athletes.

“I’m excited to see what level of baseball the next couple of weeks brings out of this group,” he said.
