Suffolk University Law School was listed among PreLaw Magazine’s “Best Law Schools for Technology Law,” “Best Law Schools for Intellectual Property,” and “Best Law School Buildings.” The listings appeared in the magazine’s spring 2018 issue.

Best Schools for Intellectual Property

Students in Suffolk Law's Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship Clinic, which defends small businesses and inventors, won a case against Monster Beverage, the $28 billion soft drink conglomerate. Their diligent efforts protected the niche blog MonsterFishKeepers.com in a multi-year case before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. As defense team member Meaghen Kenney told the Washington Post, the best part was that “they have all this money to burn, and I’m doing it for free.”

The victory follows another favorable TTAB ruling, in which IP clinic students protected the trademark of women’s-clothing brand NautiGirl against apparel giant Nautica. According to the Seattle Times, the three-year pro bono battle saved their small business client more than $200,000.

Best Schools for Technology

In the Best Law Schools for Technology ranking, the publication explained that Suffolk students, through the school’s Institute on Legal Innovation and Technology (LIT), learn about cutting-edge legal issues related to the use of new technologies, and how to use those technologies in the practice of law. “Students get a front row seat to see and work with issues being brought about by the rise of machine learning, online legal services and automated legal assistance,” the publication wrote.

Earlier this year, PreLaw ranked Suffolk among its “Top 20 Most Innovative Law Schools” and featured the school in an article, “How Suffolk Law is redefining practice-ready.” In that article the magazine called Suffolk “one of the most innovative forces in legal education.”

Suffolk Law’s offerings have repeatedly been recognized as forward-thinking. For example, students in Suffolk’s Accelerator Program won the ABA’s top honor for innovations that improve access to legal services for moderate-income people. The LIT Institute was named Pro Bono Innovator of the Year by Legaltech News. These accolades reflect Suffolk Law’s longstanding excellence in skills-based legal education. Suffolk Law is the only law school in the nation that has placed four legal skills specialties in U.S. News’ top 20 for three years running.

Best Law School Buildings

Just a few of the high points of Suffolk Law’s building: Twenty student private study rooms; three traditional court rooms, with modern technology designed for the needs of lawyers of this generation (the large moot court room is very similar to the real ones in court houses); lockers-- enough for every student; each one of the five honor boards have student lounges to use for cite-checking and conferences; kitchenettes and multipurpose printers for the student journals; four suites where students meet with clients and work on cases in the clinical program.
