R. Stanton Dodge, JD'94, on emerging sports betting market

R. Stanton Dodge, JD '94, the Chief Legal Officer of Draft Kings, the daily fantasy sports contest provider, visited Suffolk Law on February 12, 2020, to share insights from his work in the sports betting market. His lecture was part of the Donahue Lectures Series sponsored by the Suffolk University Law Review.

Draft Kings allows users to enter daily and weekly fantasy sports-related contests based on individual player and team performances in the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA, NHL, and the PGA, among many others.

In August 2018, DraftKings launched DraftKings Sportsbook in New Jersey becoming the first legal mobile sports betting operator in the state.

Prior to DraftKings, Dodge served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the DISH Network, a Fortune 200 satellite TV provider. He began the job in 1996, when the company was a little-known startup.

Dodge has received many accolades for his accomplishments in the legal field, including being named to the Legal 500, GC Powerlist (2019), which recognizes the U.S.’s 500 most influential in-house lawyers; and the National Law Journal’s “America’s 50 Outstanding General Counsel” (2016).

He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Colorado Concern, serves on the Board of Directors of National Jewish Health, and is a member of the Capital Campaign Committee for the National Western Center.  Dodge is also a member of the American Law Institute.  In 2018, Stanton began serving a six-year term on the Supreme Court Nominating Commission for the State of Colorado, and in 2015, Dodge was appointed by United States Senator Michael Bennet to serve on his Federal Judicial Selection Advisory Committee.
