Suffolk University Board of Trustees Elects Three New Members
Suffolk University today announced the appointment of three new trustees who bring broad experience in government, law, and brand management to the board, as well as a strong commitment to Suffolk’s mission.
The newest members of Suffolk’s Board of Trustees are:
- Jeffrey R. Drago, JD ’07, founding partner of Drago + Toscano, LLP, a Boston law firm, who will serve as a charter trustee
- Robyn L. Laukien, senior attorney at the Children’s Law Center of Massachusetts, who will serve as a charter trustee
- Brayden Varr, BFA ’13, creative director for Chime Financial, a San Francisco financial tech company, who will serve as an alumni trustee representing the College of Arts & Sciences
“We are excited to welcome Jeff, Robyn, and Brayden to the Suffolk Board of Trustees, each of whom brings demonstrated leadership skills to the board, as well as valuable professional expertise and innovative insights,” said Board Chair Robert Lamb. “They are all passionate about Suffolk University’s distinctive mission and will continue to strengthen the board for Suffolk’s continued growth.”
Jeffrey Drago
Attorney Jeffrey Drago spent 13 years working in government before becoming one of the founding partners of Drago + Toscano in 2010. He held senior roles in the administration of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, including serving as a special assistant to the mayor and as a neighborhood liaison in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services—work that gave him a thorough knowledge of zoning, permitting, and licensing procedures, as well as a keen understanding of how to navigate city and state government. As an attorney and lobbyist, he has represented some of Boston’s largest residential developers, hotel chains, telecommunication industry leaders, advertising companies, and cannabis dispensaries. He is a member of the Dean’s Cabinet for Suffolk University Law School, and advises Dean Andrew Perlman on key institutional matters. In addition to his Suffolk Law degree, he holds a BA in political science and government from Northeastern University.
Robyn Laukien
Attorney Robyn Laukien has worked in the corporate department of a downtown Boston law firm and as in-house counsel for an international life science company. But it was as an overseer at the New England Aquarium that she first started working with young children through a collaboration with Boston Head Start Preschools. Volunteering for Beach Teach, Laukien taught young children about the ocean, and in the process discovered her passion for making a difference in the lives of underserved children and youth. In 1999, she joined the Children’s Law Center of Massachusetts (CLCM), which provides advocacy and legal services for low-income and vulnerable children and youth. As a senior attorney, she represents her clients in the Lynn and Salem juvenile courts; she also trains attorneys for CLCM’s pro bono program, and assists with fundraising and event planning for the nonprofit. She has served for several years on the Sjogren’s Foundation Board of Trustees, and her prior board experience includes serving for 15 years as a member of the Board of Overseers at the New England Aquarium. She earned her BA in political science and government from Wellesley College, and her law degree from Boston College Law School.
Brayden Varr
Brayden Varr is a member of the Creative Leadership Team at Chime Financial where, as a creative director, he helps promote the financial tech company’s distinctive brand as a provider of fee-free banking services for everyday people. Since earning his BFA degree in graphic design from Suffolk, he has held art director and creative director positions with several prominent firms, including Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency. He is also a distinguished faculty member with General Assembly, the digital lead adult education platform, as well as a regular guest speaker for Suffolk’s graphic design courses. He previously served a three-year term on the College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Board, and has volunteered with the RAM Alumni Mentoring Program.
Marisa Kelly, president of Suffolk University, praised the new board members, saying they are “joining a board noted for its dedication and for its steadfast faith in the power of higher education to transform both individual lives and communities. I look forward to working with each of our new trustees and the board as a whole as we continue to advance Suffolk University in support of our students and our alumni.”
Lamb also announced that Dorothy Savarese, MBA ’04, HDCS ’21, the recently retired chair of Cape Cod 5 bank and a charter trustee since 2022, has been elected vice chair of the Board of Trustees. She succeeds the Hon. Amy L. Nechtem, JD ’85, emerita chief justice of the Massachusetts Juvenile Court Department, who will continue in her role as chair of the board’s Governance Committee. Charter trustees Ernst Guerrier, BS ’91, JD ’94, and Joe Sullivan, BSBA ’84, MBA ’85, were both re-elected for five-year terms.
