Suffolk University Law School is the only law school in the country to have all four legal skills specialty areas ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.
The four specialty areas – clinics, dispute resolution, legal writing and trial advocacy – all rank in the top 20, according to the recently released U.S. News “2017 Best Graduate School” rankings.
U.S. News also ranks Suffolk Law’s part-time program 38th nationally. Suffolk Law was founded as an evening school and many of the school’s most successful graduates attended law school at night.
“Our strength in these fields is a testament to Suffolk Law’s commitment to practical training and the remarkable expertise of our faculty,” said Law Dean Andrew Perlman. “For generations, Suffolk University Law School graduates have hit the ground running because of the practice-oriented education we offer. At a time of rapid change in the legal industry, this focus on practical training is more important than ever.”
Ranked programs
The Law School’s Legal Writing program is ranked sixth in the country. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Legal Writing program has been ranked among the top 10 such programs in the nation and the ninth consecutive year that the program has been ranked. The Legal Writing faculty has embraced new approaches to teaching, including an award-winning mobile app, a cutting-edge student/faculty blog Legal Writing Matters and an exam-preparation app based on memory science.
The Trial Advocacy program is ranked 16th in the nation. Suffolk Law has been a consistent leader in a competitive law school trial advocacy region. The school has won the New England Regional Championship in the AAJ National Student Trial Advocacy Competition or the New England Regional Co-Championship in the National Trial Competition 27 times in the last 31 years. Suffolk has been invited to the Tournament of Champions, which includes the top 16 schools in the country, 22 times in 27 years. One of every four judges in the Bay State is a Suffolk Law graduate and five of the 11 county district attorneys in Massachusetts are Suffolk Law alumni. Each academic year the Law School holds four trial and appellate advocacy competitions for its own students. The winners are selected by a panel of real judges--many from Suffolk Law. The regular involvement of judges, prosecutors, top trial and appellate lawyers and firm partners, generates excitement and a high level of competition.
The Law School’s Clinical Programs are ranked 17th. This is the ninth consecutive year that the clinical programs have ranked in the top 30 nationally. The clinics have responded in innovative ways to the legal market disruption. Accelerator Practice students were honored by the American Bar Association for using high-tech tools to re-engineer law practice to better serve average income clients. The IP & Entrepreneurship Clinic was featured in the Washington Post for its victory over Monster Beverage at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Close collaboration with HUD and the attorney general’s office helped the clinics secure $1.2 million in HUD grants.
The Dispute Resolution program ranked 17th. This is the fifth consecutive year that the dispute resolution program has been ranked in the top 20. The Dispute Resolution Center is one of the country's leading providers of practical mediation and negotiation classroom tools. The Center collaborates with the European Union and the U.S. Department of Justice to create cutting-edge materials used by dispute resolution faculty around the country at no charge.
