The Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman Travel Fund was established to honor the memory of Professor Emerita Kostopulos-Cooperman, whose academic excellence and commitment to her students were hallmarks of her lengthy tenure at Suffolk. The fund provides financial awards for Suffolk-sponsored international travel to undergraduates with financial need, giving them access to meaningful educational experiences in Spanish-speaking countries.

About Professor Emerita Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman

Celeste Kostopulos-CoopermanCeleste Kostopulos-Cooperman, PhD, was Professor Emerita in World Languages & Cultural Studies at Suffolk University. She held an MA and PhD in Hispanic Studies from Brown University. Professor Kostopulos-Cooperman retired from Suffolk in 2019 after leading the Spanish Department for more than 25 years. She taught students all levels of Spanish language, literature, and culture, and especially enjoyed sharing her academic passion—Latin American women's literature.

She was an award-winning translator and published many books and articles, including an extensive collaboration with her close friend, the late Chilean-American poet Marjorie Agosín. Professor Kostopulos-Cooperman is remembered as a fierce advocate for women’s rights and social justice.

In addition to teaching courses in Latin American culture such as Latin American Cinema, The Latin American Short Narrative, and Translation as Art and Craft, Professor Kostopulos-Cooperman also served as Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program. Her scholarly and creative work centered on modern and contemporary Latin American prose and poetry, women’s literature, political and human rights narratives, Latino literature, and translation theory and practice. Her translations of Latin American women’s poetry appeared in numerous publications, including Harper’s and AGNI, among many others. She received the Outstanding Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association for Circles of Madness / Círculos de Locura: Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (White Pine Press, 1992).

Professor Kostopulos-Cooperman is remembered fondly by Suffolk alumni as well as current and former faculty and staff. Her joie de vivre and resonant laugh will be greatly missed by all of her Suffolk friends and colleagues.

About The Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman Travel Fund

The Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman Travel Fund (“the Fund”) is an endowed fund for the purpose of supporting experiential travel learning opportunities for undergraduate Suffolk University students. Funds may support students’ costs associated with travel to Spanish-speaking countries (“the Purpose”). Contributions may be made by faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and others to this Fund. If contributions do not total $50,000 or more, the Fund will be considered current use and will be administered in accordance with Suffolk University’s administrative guidelines and procedures.

If, in the opinion of the University, all or part of the Fund cannot at some time in the future be usefully or practically applied to the Purpose or if the Purpose cannot be achieved because of a future change in law or unforeseeable circumstances, it may be used for any related purpose which in the opinion of the University will most nearly accomplish the Purpose as determined by the donor(s) who established the Fund.
