The Wall Street Journal places Suffolk University in the top 25 percent of the more than 1,000 colleges and universities considered in its inaugural rankings.
These “Top U.S. Colleges” rankings, compiled with Times Higher Education, an organization that ranks schools worldwide, focus on student outcomes, including postgraduate success. The rankings also emphasize student and faculty engagement and teaching effectiveness. More than 100,000 students were surveyed about the value of their education.
Suffolk University was Number 256 nationally.
Areas of particular strength include:
- Engagement – Based on interaction of faculty and students, number of programs offered and student involvement, Suffolk was given a score of 82 percent
- Career preparation – More than 75 percent of Suffolk alumni interviewed said the University had prepared them well for their careers.
- Environment – The University’s student and staff diversity, proportion of international students, and student inclusion yielded a score of 74 percent.
“These rankings capture the essence of a Suffolk University education,” said Acting President Marisa Kelly. “Our students not only work closely with faculty and peers in the classroom and labs, but they also gain valuable life experience from internships, community service, and mentoring relationships with our partners in Boston and across the globe.”
In its report on the rankings, the Wall Street Journal said they differ from others in terms of what is considered and the methodology.
“The ranking includes answers to seven questions, ranging from students’ experience with their professors to how much they collaborated on projects and were pushed to think critically, and whether they would recommend their school to others,” according to the newspaper’s report.
Phil Baty of Times Higher Education was quoted as saying that this ranking “is driven entirely by what matters most to students and families. …The survey gets to the heart of what good teaching really is and how much a university is capable of stimulating and engaging students.”

Suffolk University is listed as one of the “Best National Universities” in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best Colleges rankings. More
Suffolk also is included in The Princeton Review’s recently released 2017 edition of The Best 381 Colleges. The Princeton Review also includes the University among the select group of schools listed as Best Northeastern in the annual college guide’s web feature “Region by Region” and features Suffolk as a Green College.
