Abroad After Graduation

Your international education experience doesn’t have to end after studying abroad. There are many ways to continue your experience through work and education. You can attend graduate school, work, or teach abroad.

Teach and Work Abroad

This position allows you to gain valuable classroom experience while also learning about a new culture. Teaching assistants work approximately 13hr/week in Austrian secondary schools. Offers approximately 140 U.S. teaching assistant positions each year for a one-year, renewable position (October 1-May 31).

Amount

$100 processing fee (if accepted to program). You must find your own accommodation. Net monthly salary of approximately $1,500.

Eligibility

Available to U.S. citizens under the age of 29 who hold (or will hold) a BA. Applicants must have a working knowledge of German.

Deadlines

Application open each year on November 1 and is due on January 15.

English Program in Korea is sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education. EPIK teachers work for one-year alongside Korean co-teachers to improve English-speaking abilities and develop cultural exchanges. Teachers work approximately 40 hours per week with housing provided.

Amount

No application fee. Teachers receive a salary that differs based on individual skills and location.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university, be a citizen of a country where the primary language is English and be fluent in English.

The JET Program is a competitive employment opportunity that places recent college graduates throughout Japan to teach in public and private schools. This is a one year program where applicants assist Japanese teachers and work directly with students to improve language skills.

Amount

No application fee. Teachers receive a monthly salary.

Eligibility

Must be a U.S. citizen, hold (or will hold) a BA, and have excellent English-language skills.

Deadlines

Applications are open every fall from late September to mid-November.

Positions are available in K-12 schools throughout Spain for the academic year, to help to increase Spanish students’ knowledge of English and North American culture. The program's main objective is to provide North American native English speakers with the opportunity to assist a teacher in the English program in elementary, secondary or language schools in Spain (12 to 16 hours a week).

Amount

$50 Application fee and $2,350 program fee. Monthly stipend of about 1,000 euros.

Eligibility

Native English Speaker, must obtain BA, Citizen of U.S., Ireland, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, 59 or younger (no language or teaching requirement).

The Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship that offers early career leaders immersive, professional experiences in Asia. It is experiential rather than academic in nature and aims to forge stronger, more informed, more compassionate relationships across geographic borders by creating opportunities for young Americans across diverse sectors and interests to deepen their ties and understanding of the countries, cultures, and people of Asia. The Program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15 to 18 Luce Scholars each year, and welcomes applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a wide range of fields and from a variety of backgrounds who have had limited exposure to Asia.

Amount

No application fee. Scholars will receive a monthly stipend which differs based on location placement.

Eligibility

Must be U.S. citizens or a permanent residence, hold a BA, and be under the age of 32 or have received BA in last three years.

Deadlines

Application period is from late June to mid-October.

Provides a $30,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue 1-year of public service anywhere in the world. Applicants must generate a proposal for public service that encompasses any activity that furthers the public good. Applicants may propose to work alone or through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental or public service organizations. One award is granted each year.

Eligibility

All graduating students from U.S. colleges are welcome to apply.

Deadline

Applications are open yearly and are due in mid-January.

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is a non-profit organization that places recent graduates in teaching positions in a variety of countries. They have teaching programs in Spain, China, South Korea, and Thailand. CIEE helps with placement, the visa process, housing, and much more.

Amount

There are typically application and programs fees, but the costs vary due to the numerous programs offered.

TEFL is required for certain programs.

This program, run by the French Ministry of Education, offers recent graduates the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students (12 hours per week). Every year, approximately 1,500 American citizens teach in public schools all over France. The goal of the program is to improve foreign language instruction in France while also giving young educators the opportunity to teach and experience French culture firsthand.

Amount

$80 Application fee and $37 visa processing fee. Monthly salary of about 785 euros.

Eligibility

Must be proficient in French, have completed 3+ years of higher education, citizen or permanent residence of U.S., 20-35 years old, and must be a native English speaker.

Applications are due yearly on January 15.

Global Graduate School

Each year, the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships of up to $23,000 to American graduate students and academic and/or creative arts professionals interested in pursuing research or creative arts projects in the Nordic region (Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sámpi, and Sweden). Awards are made in all fields.

ASF’s award program for study and research abroad has been the Foundation’s most long-standing commitment to educational exchange. During the past 100 years, over 4,000 fellowships and grants have been given to Americans in the Nordic region engaged in study, research, or creative arts projects.

Amount

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers year-long fellowships of up to $23,000 and short term (1-3 months) fellowships of up to $5,000 to graduate students (preferably conducting dissertation research)

Eligibility

Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents.

Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully-documented application.

Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of their project in the Nordic region.

The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship at the American University in Dubai seeks to further the goals of the Clinton Presidential Foundation to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. In partnership with the American University in Dubai, the program will provide American students based in the US the opportunity to expand their educational and cultural horizons by studying in the Arab world.

Amount

Clinton Scholarship Recipients will receive:

  • A full waiver of tuition for one semester (Fall or Spring);
  • On-campus housing at The American University in Dubai on a shared-room basis.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open only to students who are U.S. Citizens. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, a student must currently be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate degree candidate at an accredited four-year college/university in the United States. It is expected that applicants will demonstrate exemplary academic achievement. Preference will be given to students who show interest in being exposed to the Middle Eastern and Islamic cultures for the first time.

Whether you plan to study abroad for a semester or get your entire degree outside the United States, you may be able to use federal student aid to pay your expenses. The type of aid you can get—and the process you must follow—will depend on the type of program (study-abroad or full degree) you plan to enter. Your status as an undergraduate or graduate student also affects the type of aid for which you’re eligible, just as it does at schools in the U.S.

With more than 60,000 scholarships granted each year, DAAD claims that it is the largest academic exchange organization in the world. This service offers several scholarship programs, including one for highly qualified graduate students for study stays, language learning, longer research periods, or full degrees in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Scholarship payments of 861 euros a month

Eligibility

Students in their last year of undergraduate studies at an accredited US or Canadian university.

US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Foreign nationals who live in the USA or in Canada by the time of application deadline are eligible, if your last degree was obtained in the US/Canada, or you will have received a degree in the US/Canada before your scholarship starts. All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office.

Recent BA/BS or MA/MS graduates who completed their last degree no longer than 6 years ago.

Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline.

A Master’s degree program already started in Germany cannot be funded.

The Marshall Scholarship funds two years of graduate study at a British university, with the possibility of a third year. Each scholarship has a value of around 23,000 GBP or $32,000 per year covering tuition, books, travel, and living expenses. Applicants must be a US citizen who graduated from an undergraduate institution with at least a 3.70 GPA. Recipients typically have outstanding academic and extracurricular records.

  • Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship).
  • By the time they take up their scholarship (i.e., September 2023), hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States.
  • Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application. We do not accept rounded GPA's.
  • Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2020.
  • Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland.

Amount

The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides full tuition, housing (on-campus, when available), and a monthly living stipend (currently $1250 USD).

Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be 18 years of age or older, but not yet 30, on the date the application is due. For example, if the deadline is September 29 and you turn 30 on September 28, you are not eligible.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar. Degrees from international accredited universities are acceptable, if all other conditions are met.

Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus: promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. Grants can be applied to fund international graduate-level study, humanitarian projects, and vocational training.

Amount

Global grants have a minimum budget of $30,000 and a maximum World Fund award of $400,000.

Eligibility

To be approved, your application must clearly describe how your project, scholarship, or vocational training team:

  • Is sustainable — include plans for long-term success after the global grant funds have been spent
  • Includes measurable goals
  • Aligns with one of Rotary's areas of focus
  • Responds to real community needs — any club or district that applies for a global grant to support a humanitarian project or a vocational training team must conduct a community assessment first and design the project based on what they learn through that assessment.
  • Actively involves Rotary and community members
  • Meets the eligibility requirements in the grants terms and conditions

Sponsoring clubs and districts must submit their applications by June 30 to the Rotary Foundation for scholars who will begin studies in August, September, or October.
