Study Abroad

Students electing to participate in a study abroad program should be aware there may be additional costs associated with studying abroad. It is important to resolve financial issues prior to leaving the country.

If a student is receiving aid, that funding (with the exception of employment) can normally be used for a University-affiliated study abroad program. Non-affiliated programs are not eligible for institutional forms of financial aid. Federal and state programs may be available, but require additional paperwork for a non-affiliated program. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Services for more information.

While studying abroad, please be aware that:

• Financial aid deadlines at Suffolk remain the same while you are studying abroad
  Returning students must complete their FAFSA by the published aid deadline(s) to ensure maximum financial aid eligibility
• Academic transcripts are often delayed from study abroad institutions
  Federal regulations require SFS to review academic progress at the conclusion of every term or payment period. This may delay your subsequent term’s financial aid funding disbursement
  The student is ultimately responsible to make sure that all documents are received by Suffolk University in order for financial aid to be processed. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their financial aid counselor to discuss delayed disbursements
• Study abroad programs may have start/end dates that do not align with Suffolk University’s academic calendar
  If you are a federal loan recipient this may affect your loan repayment status and your grace period; please contact your aid counselor for more information
