Tuition Benefits

At Suffolk, we offer generous tuition benefits to our employees. You can use them for your spouse or dependent partner, and your children, too.

More About Suffolk's Tuition Benefits

All employees and faculty members who are at least half-time are eligible for the tuition free course benefit in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the Sawyer Business School. The benefit, which is a waiver or reduction of tuition, begins at the start of the term immediately following the employee’s date of employment. Note: employees whose date of employment falls within the “add/drop” period (usually within the first two weeks of the semester) may begin tuition benefits in that semester retroactive to the beginning of the semester.

Full-time employees (those regularly scheduled for 30 or more hours per week) may take up to three tuition free courses (maximum 10 credits) per Fall and Spring semesters, up to four courses (maximum 14 credits) during summer sessions and 1 course in the winter session (4 employee maximum). Three quarter time employees (those regularly scheduled for 22 ½ and up to 30 hours per week) may take up to two courses (maximum 8 credits) per Fall and Spring semesters and up to two courses (maximum 8 credits) during summer sessions. Half-time employees (those regularly scheduled for 17 ½ and up to 22 ½ hours per week) may take one course (maximum 4 credits) per Fall and Spring semesters and up to two courses (maximum 8 credits) during summer sessions.

At the beginning of the semester, following two consecutive years of employment in at least a half-time regularly budgeted position, tuition benefits are also available in the Evening Law School. Full-time employees receive a 75% reduction in tuition, three quarter time employees receive a 50% reduction and half-time employees receive a 25% reduction in tuition. (Please note that the Law School tuition benefit is not available to Law School employees except to those who work in the Moakley Law Library.)

The spouse or domestic partner of a full-time employee, or of a faculty member who is at least half-time, is eligible for a 50% reduction in tuition in any Suffolk school or college. The benefit begins at the start of the term immediately following the employee’s date of employment. Note: employees whose date of employment falls within the “add/drop” period (usually within the first two weeks of the semester) may begin tuition benefits in that semester retroactive to the beginning of the semester. Domestic partners must have a valid domestic partner affidavit [PDF] on file.

Tuition Remission Form

The dependent child of a full-time employee, or of a faculty member who is at least half-time, is eligible for a full tuition benefit in any Suffolk school or college. The benefit begins at the start of the term immediately following the employee’s second anniversary of consecutive employment in a benefit eligible status. Note: employees whose anniversary date of employment falls within the “add/drop” period (usually within the first two weeks of the semester) may begin tuition benefits in that semester retroactive to the beginning of the semester.

Tuition Remission Form

Tuition paid by an outside party directly to the University on behalf of a tuition remission recipient will be applied first to the recipient's tuition account. The tuition remission benefit will then be applied up to the amount allowed under the Suffolk policy. In no case will the tuition remission benefit exceed the total value of tuition.

Tuition remission recipients are not eligible for University based merit scholarships or other institutional financial aid. Recipients may be eligible for Pell, federal, or other state entitlement programs or private loans. The tuition remission benefit will be applied first to the recipient's tuition account and then the loans will be applied.

Tuition remission may reduce other financial aid benefits. Contact the appropriate Financial Aid Office for more information.

Employees who are participants in the VA Yellow Ribbon program receive a matching scholarship from the University under the Yellow Ribbon program, not under the Tuition Remission program. The Student Accounts Office can answer questions about the Yellow Ribbon program.

Suffolk University is a member of the Tuition Exchange (TE) program. TE is a national scholarship exchange program whose membership is made up of over 600+ colleges and universities. Under this program, dependent children in or entering college may apply for a tuition scholarship from any school in the TE network. TE seeks an even exchange of tuition among member institutions over time with members expected to maintain a balance of the students exported and imported. No student is guaranteed a scholarship, but TE provides another scholarship opportunity.

Full-time employees and titled faculty members with at least 2 years of continuous employment prior to the start of the academic year for which the Tuition Exchange scholarship is requested are eligible for Tuition Exchange participation.

A full list of participating colleges and universities, as well as additional information about the TE organization, can be found online at http://www.tuitionexchange.org/. For additional information about the application and decision process, please read the Tuition Exchange Export Policy below.
