There are a number of open source opportunities for taking a science course. MIT Open Course Ware, one example, provides core academic materials, including syllabi, lecture notes, assignments, and exams from nearly all of their undergraduate and graduate level courses. Many of MIT's faculty members have volunteered to share their teaching and materials through OCW including documents, video, audio, simulations, and animations for the purposes of offering education to a wider audience.
MIT Open Course Ware provides courses free of charge, note that participation and completion of these courses do not provide credit, but rather experience and learning through the content and curriculum.
