Professional Experience

Professor Rivard teaches Leadership and Ethics in Healthcare Organizations as well as Ambulatory and Primary Care, and he co-teaches Applied Research Methods for Healthcare Management with Professor Al-Amin. Before embarking on his current work in healthcare management research and teaching, he managed ambulatory care services and facilities and served as administrator of a teaching hospital division, in the greater Boston area. As a manager, he led improvements in patient care service quality. His research continues this focus on leadership and management of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety. Prior to his career as a healthcare manager, he developed policy and programs for a Massachusetts health insurer.

Professor Rivard’s teaching interests include leadership, management, organizational behavior, healthcare quality and patient safety. Before joining the Suffolk faculty, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the VA Boston Healthcare System’s Center for Organization, Leadership and Management Research (COLMR) and Instructor in Health Policy and Management at the Boston University School of Public Health.

His research has been published in several top-tier journals, such as the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, Journal of Patient Safety, and Quality and Safety in Healthcare.
