Law School Commencement

All students (JD, LLM, SJD) anticipating graduation must submit an Academic Degree Application:

  • October 1st for January 2019 graduates
  • January 1st for May 2019 and September 2019 graduates
  • Degree Application is located on MySuffolk--Graduation

Regalia

All graduates attending the ceremony must order Academic Attire on MySuffolk.

Caps and gowns will be available for pick-up from May 1 through May 10 in the Suffolk Bookstore.

Housing Accommodations

Families attending Suffolk University Commencement exercises have the option to stay on campus at the Nathan R. Miller Residence Hall. Nightly rates are $68 per person for a single room/shared bath and $60 per person for a double room/shared bath.

Continental breakfast, bed linens, a pillow, and bath towels as well as Wi-Fi are included in your nightly rate.

Guests may stay up to three (3) nights (no stay minimum). Rooms are available starting Friday, May 17, through Monday, May 20.

Commencement Tickets and Invitations

Each graduate indicating attendance at the ceremony will be provided with 10 guest invitations/tickets and may also request additional tickets. (complete extra ticket form). The number of extra tickets available is based on the number of graduates attending the ceremony. The request for extra tickets is located on MySuffolk.

Tickets and invitations will be available for pick up, May 1 through May 10 at the Office of Academic Services.

International Student Visa Invitation

Students can request a visa invitation letter online through the Center for International Programs and Services.

After the online form is submitted, a staff member from the Center will be in contact regarding picking up the letter.

Law Commencement

GRADUATES

Please plan to be at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion on May 19, 2019. Graduates enter through main entrance. Guests are not permitted to enter time specified. Ushers will be available to direct graduates to the student robing area. Please pay special attention the bag safety instructions/restrictions in this booklet.

LINE- UP

Each graduate will be handed a 3” X 5” card bearing his/her name typed with the appropriate honors, concentration, and joint degree by a member of the Office of Academic Services staff. Graduates will be directed to the appropriate line up area. This card is also numbered so that each Graduate will be lined up in alphabetical order. Do not make ANY changes or additions to the card. This card must be presented to an Associate Dean upon reaching the stage.

Honors – Students who graduate with honors will be provided with an honor cord representing the honor received.

Summa Cum Laude – Gold

Magna Cum Laude – Silver

Cum Laude – Bronze

BEFORE COMMENCEMENT BEGINS

Keep noise at a minimum in the robing area to facilitate last minute instructions. DO NOT LEAVE ANY PERSONAL ITEMS IN THE ROBING AREA. LEAVE THEM WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS. Please turn off all cell phones.

PROCESSION

Graduates will start to march ten (10) feet behind the University Marshall. Go slowly, keep in line and follow directions. File into the seats reserved for the Graduates under the direction of the usher. All Graduates will remain standing until the Chairman of the Board calls the Commencement Exercise to order and gives further direction.

PROCEDURE FOR STANDING WHEN DEGREE IS CALLED

When the candidates for the JD degree are asked to stand by Dean Perlman, please stand together. Under the directions of an usher, proceed to the stage one row at a time and keep a continuous flow to the foot of the stage. You will march to the left front stairs as you face the stage.

PROCEEDING TO STAGE AND RECEIVING DIPLOMA

Upon reaching the stage, hand the card with your typed name to an Associate Dean, who will then read your name and appropriate honors. Proceed to Dean Perlman who will hand your diploma to you. Accept the diploma with your left hand and shake hands with Dean Perlman with your right hand. Proceed across the stage, and down the second set of front stairs and return to your seat.

PHOTOS

Guests will be restricted from approaching the stage area to take photos.

Note: A photographer will be taking pictures as each Graduate receives his/her diploma. Keep tassels on the left of the cap so that an unobstructed picture may be taken. (Commencement Photos, 1348 Main St., Tewksbury, MA 01876, 978-851-5924)

RETURNING TO SEAT

After all Graduates are seated, the President will ask all Graduates to stand as a group to be recognized. Then sit as a group.

RECESSIONAL

The University Marshall will come forward and raise the baton to signal the stage party and all Graduates to stand for the Recession. The Graduates will follow the stage party and march out in two lines down the center aisle. Proceed slowly in line. 

DIPLOMA

During the formal Commencement Exercises, each May ‘19 Graduate will receive a congratulatory letter to facilitate an orderly Commencement process and to avoid any damage to the diploma. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, you will return to the robing area and pick up your actual diploma.

CAP AND GOWN RETURNS

Caps and gowns are rental outfits and must be returned at the end of the ceremony. A replacement cost of $450.00 will be assessed to any graduate who does not return the cap/gown/hood to the bookstore.
