Emergency and After-Hour Care
To obtain medical attention if you believe you have an emergency:
- On campus: First, dial 9-911 from a campus phone, 911 from a non-campus phone. Then, notify Suffolk University Police at extension 8111, or 617-573-8111, that you have called for an ambulance and provide the location where the medical emergency exists. Suffolk University Police will guide the EMTs to the correct location as well as come to the location to offer assistance.
- Off campus: Dial 911.
*Note: If you’ve been referred for emergency hospital treatment, in order for you to receive appropriate medical or mental health care, it is important that you are honest with hospital staff about your situation in general and the specific incident(s) that occurred prior to this emergency hospital visit.
Your Next Steps
If you are referred to the hospital by Suffolk staff:
If you are being treated at Counseling & Health Services, a staff member will call ahead to inform the hospital that you will be arriving. The staff member will also discuss options for getting to the hospital. Suffolk University will provide taxi vouchers at no cost to you, and you can use them for transport to and from the hospital.
If you are a resident student, contact University Police at 617-573-8111 to let them know you have returned to campus. Submit your taxi receipt to the campus security officer at the desk in your residence hall.
If you live in an off-campus apartment, submit your taxi receipt to the staff member you are working with at Counseling & Health Services.
If you are a resident student going to the hospital without a Suffolk staff referral:
If you feel you need hospital treatment, go to the nearest hospital for emergency care. You can obtain a taxi voucher at no cost at the security desk in your residence hall, which you can use for transport to and from the hospital. If you are living in a leased property connected with the university, contact University Police at 617-573-8111 to obtain a taxi voucher. Inform the hospital you are a Suffolk University student.
If you live off campus and go to the hospital without a Suffolk staff referral:
If you feel you need hospital treatment, go to the nearest hospital for emergency care. You will be responsible for the transportation costs to and from the hospital. Inform the hospital that you are a Suffolk University student.
Tips to Keep in Mind
- Before you are discharged from the hospital, ask the hospital staff to fax a discharge summary and any recommendations for continued treatment to the Suffolk University Counseling Center at 617-227-3685 or Health Services at 617-305-1745.
- Ask the hospital to contact Metro Taxi at 617-242-8000 to provide a ride back to your residence hall or leased property.
- Contact the Counseling Center at 617-573-8226 or Health Services at 617-573-8260 to schedule a follow-up.
You should ask a staff member at Counseling & Health Services for an evaluation after you have been discharged from the hospital. This meeting will assess your ability to return to a rigorous academic environment.
Your evaluation will also help Suffolk learn about follow-up care you may be receiving from non-Suffolk mental health or medical providers and to offer ongoing support to ensure your recovery.
If you are under the care of a non-Suffolk mental health or medical provider, you will be asked to allow him or her to speak with a staff member at Counseling & Health Services about your continued care.

When Suffolk University CHW health services is closed, the following medical resources near campus are available to students:

The Medical Walk-In Unit is open every day, except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Weekends and holidays, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
If the Medical Walk-In Unit is experiencing high patient volume, they may be required to close prior to the posted hours. Please arrive as early as possible and register in advance. To register, contact the Mass General Registration and Referral Center at 866-211-6588.
