Orientation Leaders (OLs) play an integral role in the success of Suffolk's orientation program and are recognized leaders throughout the university community. They serve as group leaders, contacts between various departments, peer mentors/educators, and positive role models both during and after orientation. They are actively involved in assisting new undergrad students with their transition to college, whether it’s from high school, the workforce, military, or another higher education institution. Orientation Leaders also work closely with family members of new students and support new student programs during the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

OLs are trained year-round in institutional information, group dynamics, leadership fundamentals, and student development. They receive financial compensation for work performed (during orientations conducted throughout the year) as well as room and board in an on-campus residence hall during summer orientation.

Minimum Applicant Requirements

Enrollment:
Enrolled as a full-time Suffolk University undergraduate student (and not plan to graduate before December 2019).
Grade Point Average:
A cumulative Suffolk grade point average of 2.75 or higher at the time of selection and throughout tenure in the position. Appeals of the GPA requirements will be considered on an individual basis if submitted by email before January 2nd.

Position Terms & Conditions for all Applicants

  1. Be in good academic and judicial standing with Suffolk University at the time of selection and throughout tenure in the position.
  2. Be available for all important dates (Download 2019 Orientation Leader Important Dates [PDF]), including participation in spring training workshops, orientation team retreat, summer training, and work all applicable orientation sessions/new student programs while serving on a diverse student leadership team.
  3. Understand, believe in and remain committed to the mission and goals of Orientation, New Student & Family Programs at Suffolk University.
  4. Remain flexible and engaged in assignments while demonstrating open and ongoing communication with staff and co-workers.
  5. Relate to and interact well with current and new students, family members, faculty, and staff at Suffolk.
  6. Adhere to all staff policies and training guidelines and positively support other leaders in the performance of their job duties and leadership development.

Selection Process

STEP 1:
Attend one (1) required information session. 
You are required to attend one (full length of time) information session to learn more about the position and application/selection process before the established application deadline. You can attend an information session if you're not sure about applying - it is a great way to learn more! You must be on time and be prepared not to leave early. We look forward to meeting you at one of the following required information sessions (each required information session lasts for 1 hr. Please arrive on time and plan to stay for the full length of time):

 

  • November 13th from 12:30-1:30 pm Sawyer 908
  • November 14th from 3:00-4:00 pm 73 Tremont 4036
  • November 20th from 12:30-1:30 pm Sawyer 908
  • November 29th from 6:00-7:00 pm 73 Tremont 4048
  • December 3rd from 3:00-4:00 pm 73 Tremont 4036
  • December 4th from 12:30-1:30 pm Sawyer 908

STEP 2:
Submit all required application materials by deadline: December 18th, 2019 for 2019 Orientation Leader Section Process

Required Dates: Please ensure that you review the "Required Dates Sheet" before applying.

  1. Attend one (1) required information session
  2. Complete online application (including responses to all application questions)
  3. We recommend submitting one (1) reference form but it is not required (see instructions on form [PDF])
  4. Sign up for (1) required group interview (sign ups occur at information sessions)

Reference Forms: One (1) reference form (Download Form Here [PDF]) is recommended as part of the application process. The reference form can come from a Suffolk faculty or staff member, a student leader, or a former/current outside employer. It is the candidate’s responsibility to make sure completed references are submitted to Orientation, New Student & Family Programs by the deadline. STEP 3: 
Attend One (1) Group Interview. All applicants who submit all of their application materials by the deadline, including attending a required information session, and who meet the minimum qualifications will participate in a mandatory group interview as the next step in the selection process. You sign up for your group interview session while at an information session (if you need to change your date, you must contact Orientation, New Student & Family Programs no later than 24 hours before the scheduled session time). Candidates should plan to arrive on time and not leave early for group interviews. Candidate who miss their scheduled group interview or arrive late may be eliminated from the selection process automatically. Dress for group interviews is casual/comfortable (come prepared to move and possibly sit on the floor). Group interviews will be held on:

 

  • January 17th at 6pm
  • January 18th at 2pm

STEP 4: Invitation Only
Attend One (1) Individual Interview. 
Following group interviews, finalist candidates will be invited (via Suffolk email) to sign up for a 25 min. individual interview to be held at the Office of Orientation, New Student & Family Programs (Sawyer 825). Candidates will meet individually with staff members. Dress for individual interviews is business casual. Individual interviews will be held during the following time period:

  • Tuesday, January 22nd - Friday, February 1st
STEP 5: 
Notification of Selection
Candidates will be notified of selection decisions the week of February 5th (check your Suffolk email).
