Faculty Mentoring Program - CAS
The goals of the Faculty Mentoring Program (FMP) are:
- To acquaint new faculty with the norms, expectations, and challenges of the faculty role in the College of Arts and Sciences
- To help integrate new faculty into the College and University communities
- To provide instruction and support to new faculty regarding teaching, service, and scholarship expectations in the College
- To provide informal guidelines and support for tenure-track faculty as they proceed through the promotion and tenure process
Mentoring offers senior members of the faculty an opportunity to serve the College of Arts and Sciences by helping to draw new colleagues into the fold. Serving as a mentor gives tenured faculty members a chance to reassess and communicate their own experiences as teachers, researchers, and members of the University community. Mentors provide a valuable service to their individual mentees and help to build a stronger, more collegial faculty overall.
Having a mentor gives junior faculty a person to turn to for guidance about the structure, governance, expectations, and climate of the College. Mentors serve as role models and advocates. They help new faculty members to navigate the University and provide advice about teaching, scholarship, and university service - and the balancing of these components in a successful academic career. Extra-departmental mentors also help new faculty to network across the College and University.
All incoming tenure-track faculty are invited to participate in the FMP. The mentoring partnership is purely voluntary on the part of both parties, and it may be ended at either's request. It involves no formal review of the tenure-track faculty member's performance, and all information shared with the mentor is to be considered confidential.
