Suffolk Rich History of Civil Engagement and Performing Arts
The C. Walsh Theatre at Suffolk University - 55 Temple Street (1920-2016)

Exterior of the Archer Building, 1920. Entrance to the C. Walsh Theatre is at right of photo (on Temple Street).
History of the C. Walsh Theatre
Suffolk University founder Gleason Archer built the theatre in the early 1920s to support the development of Suffolk’s new Law School. Revenues from its daytime use as a silent movie theatre - with the largest pipe organ in New England - financed operations and Law School classes at night.
Beginning in 1977, under the leadership of David Dowart, and then in 1982, under the leadership of Marilyn Plotkins, the C. Walsh Theatre was home to a robust mix of premiere professional performing arts groups, renowned speakers and academic conferences, and student plays and cultural programs facilitated by the Theatre Department.
