Academic Period Course Load

The number of credits you are taking is important when it comes to your course load, which can impact your financial aid.

Course Loads

All undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits per academic period to be considered full-time, between 9-11 credits per academic period to be considered three-quarter time, and at least 6 credits per academic period to be considered half-time.

Undergraduate students may take up to 17 credits in the fall and spring academic periods as part of a normal full-time course load.

Undergraduate students may not exceed 4 credits in either the Fall 1, Fall 2, Spring 1, or Spring 2 academic periods.

International Students

All international students are required to enroll in at least 12 credits per academic period in residence.

Summer Academic Periods

Undergraduate students may take a maximum of 16 credits during an entire summer academic period but may not exceed 8 credits in either Summer 1 or Summer 2 academic periods.

Excess Course Petition

Permission is required to exceed the normal full-time course load in any one term for all undergraduate students. There is, however, one exception to this policy:

  • Undergraduate students who have been in residence at the University for two full academic periods (not including summer) and have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the institution may register for a maximum of 18 credits during the fall and spring academic periods only.

Use the Create Request task on your Academics Hub to submit an online form Excess Course Petition.
