Marine Science Minor

Our marine science minor prepares students to engage directly with coastal and urban marine environments, opening pathways to internships and careers in marine research labs, aquariums, environmental consulting firms, and government agencies.

You’ll start with two foundational courses with laboratories: Environmental Science and Organismal Biology. Then, you’ll choose three electives from a variety of courses, such as Introduction to Coastal Geology, Advanced Wetlands, or Ocean and Coasts.

As a marine science minor, you will:

  • Develop foundational knowledge of marine ecosystems and oceanographic processes
  • Apply scientific methods and critical thinking to marine science questions
  • Cultivate skills in interdisciplinary and applied aspects of marine science
  • Strengthen communication and collaboration skills in marine science contexts
  • Foster ethical and environmental responsibility regarding the ocean and coastal systems

This minor is open to all students and is a strong complement for students majoring in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or environmental studies.

An Ideal Location

Boston is an ideal place to study marine science. Our school is situated near marine environments, such as urban estuary systems and rocky coastal shores. On campus, the sciences have a home in Suffolk’s newest building, the Samia Academic Center, featuring state-of-the-art labs and research facilities including saltwater tanks. Students also have access to several local fieldtrips and internships. Recent field trips include universities with graduate programs in marine science and bird banding activities in the field. Current student internship sites include the New England Aquarium and National Park Service.
