About James Cataldo

Jim is currently an assistant professor of accounting at Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Business in Boston, Massachusetts. Early in his career, Jim worked for the Federal Treasury Department's Office of Thrift Supervision, assisting bank supervision and closures at the culmination of the Savings and Loan Crisis in the late 80's. Before joining Suffolk, Jim was the Director of Treasury Risk Management at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, an $80 billion federally sponsored enterprise providing wholesale funding to the mortgage industry. Jim's previous experience also includes bond and structured product trading for Cantor Fitzgerald, a New York based broker dealer.

At Suffolk, Jim's teaching and research centers on financial accounting and valuation methods in financial reporting, with particular focus on the financial industry. His comments on the current banking crisis and related issues have appeared in Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNN, the Associated Press, and the Toronto based Business News Network. With Morris McInnes, Associate Dean of the Suffolk Business School, Jim co-authored an article on Fair Value for the CPAJournal which was awarded the New York State Society of CPAs 2007 Max Block Distinguished Article Award. Their 2009 article, 'The Accounting Identity and the Identity of Accountants', won the American Accounting Association's Public Interest Section's best paper award at its annual conference. Jim and Dean McInnes are frequent contributors to the FASB and IASB's public comment process on proposed accounting standards. Jim's recent activities include consultation on financial and economic policy for Representative Michael Capuano (D, Massachusetts), a prominent member of the US House Financial Services Committee.

Jim received his PhD in Economics from Columbia University, and a BA in Economics and English and American Literature from Brandeis University.
