About Professor Robert DeFillippi

Robert DeFillippi is Professor and Chair of the Strategy and International Business department and Director of the Center for Innovation and Change Leadership at the Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University. Additionally, Dr. DeFillippi is an international scholar in innovation and he has held visiting scholar appointments at Imperial College of London, Cass Business School (London), the Center for Research in Innovation Management at University of Sussex and Polytechnico di Milano. Dr. DeFillippi holds an MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University in Organization Studies.

His research, teaching and consulting practice focuses on creative collaborations and knowledge-based perspectives on innovation. DeFillippi's most recent scholarly book Knowledge At Work: Creative Collaborations in the Global Economy (2006, Blackwell Press, Oxford, UK) draws upon his past research on these topics. He is the author of over forty scholarly journal publications and seven scholarly books and numerous book chapters and conference papers. He is currently Associate Editor for the International Journal of Management Reviews, the official journal of the British Academy of Management.

His current research is focusing on several broad themes: How can organizations co-produce knowledge and innovative solutions with their customers? How can innovation service projects be organized to maximize the sharing of relevant knowledge by project teams and their clientele and how can the knowledge created from past project engagements be leveraged in future project engagements with the same customer or new customers? Dr. DeFillippi is participating in several major international and local research projects in a wide variety of business to business service industries to address these questions.

Dr. DeFillippi publishes in leading US and European journals on issues related to how knowledge creation and learning can be fostered through the effective organization and management of innovative and creative work-based projects. His scholarly writing focuses on project organizations as vehicles for knowledge creation and dissemination and his empirical research includes project-based industries related to high technology (optoelectronics) and cultural industries (film-making and digital entertainment) as well as business services (innovation and design consultancies) . His publications have appeared in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, California Management Review, Human Resource Planning, International Journal of Human Resource Management, International Journal of Innovation Management, International Journal of Management Reviews, Journal of Organization Behavior, Organization Dynamics, Organization Studies, Management Learning, Public Productivity and Management Review, and Regional Studies.

Dr. DeFillippi is Associate Editor for the International Journal of Management Reviews and serves on the editorial boards of Management Learning and Organization Management Journals. He has served as guest editor for past issues of Journal of Organization Behavior (2007), Management Learning (2001) and Organization Studies (2004) related to his work on project-based learning and project-based innovation respectively. Dr. DeFillippi was 2001-2002 Chairperson for Management Education and Development for the Academy of Management and currently serves on the Management Education and Development Executive Board. He has received national recognition for his workshops on project-based learning and is a frequent speaker at international conferences on project learning and project organizations.
