Awards support projects that directly enhance the learning experience of Suffolk students.
TEALIGs have two funding cycles
- Fall Funding Cycle (for funds to be used Jan 1, 2020-Jun 26, 2020)
- Application Due Friday, October 11th, 2019

- Spring Funding Cycle (for funds to be used July 1, 2020-December 31, 2020)
- Application Due: Friday, February 14th, 2020
- Decision Received: Friday, March 13th, 2020
We invite proposals for grants within the following categories
- Open Educational Resource (OER) Development: The CTSE encourages the development of teaching resources that can be shared across departments, colleges, or the university to enhance student learning. Faculty will be supported in designing such resources as video tutorials, audio podcasts, workbooks, problem sets, online simulations, case studies, or other educational tools that can be shared with members of the Suffolk teaching community.
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is methodical, evidence-based research about student learning in higher education. To support the sharing of innovative teaching and learning practices, the CTSE will fund research projects that rigorously measure and assess the effectiveness of teaching strategies that are being implemented in Suffolk University classrooms.
- Travel Funds: Funds are available for faculty who wish to present at educational conferences. While we will consider supporting a single faculty’s attendance at a conference, our preference is to support faculty presenting on their own teaching innovations. Those applying for travel funds must describe the direct impact their conference attendance will have on students.
- Innovative, Evidence-Based Instructional Strategies: In line with Suffolk University’s strategic imperatives, the CTSE supports faculty efforts in interdisciplinary course design, universal design for instruction, service learning, team-based learning, flipped classroom, etc. Out-of-pocket expenses for innovative teaching may qualify for reimbursement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are TEALIG funding levels?
Grants for categories 1, 2 and 4 submitted by individuals may be awarded up to $2,000. A group of two or more may apply for up to $5,000. For category 3, an amount sufficient to cover registration, travel and accommodation may be awarded. Budgets may be approved in whole or in part. Faculty may apply for only one category of award each funding cycle. Funding received can be used only for the category of award applied for. All awards are subject to availability of funds.

Who is eligible to apply for a TEALIG?
All full-time faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Sawyer Business School, and the Law School are eligible to apply for a TEALIG. Please note that CTSE Advisory Board members are ineligible to apply for funding. Faculty may not receive funding in back-to-back funding cycles.
Please note that we are unlikely to fund activities such as basic course (re)design. TEALIGs also do not fund the purchase of laptops. Proposals funded in the past have been in support of projects that go above and beyond typical faculty responsibilities.
Who decides the awards?
The Awards Committee will be under the auspices of the CTSE, and will be composed of full-time faculty members from each school and at least one CTSE staff member. The Awards Committee will be comprised of CTSE advisory board members when possible.
What happens if I’m funded?
Payment of TEALIG awards is through reimbursement or salary stipend. The CTSE will only release your funding once you have provided us with evidence that your project is underway (e.g., if you need reimbursements) or that your project is completed (e.g., for a salary stipend). You need to submit your summary report to the CTSE before your salary stipend will be released. Salary stipends cannot be prepaid and taxes will be applied. The CTSE is committed to supporting TEALIG recipients throughout their projects. We strongly encourage regular meetings between you and a TEALIG staff member, upon mutual agreement, during your funding cycle to include collaborative strategizing, updating, and debriefing on progress. Evaluation and assessment are imperative to determining the success of one’s project. The CTSE can support you in this process, including facilitating a midterm feedback session for projects involving specific courses.
Recipients are required to submit a short summary report (a few paragraphs is sufficient) detailing how the funding was spent to the CTSE within one month of the end of the funding cycle.
What if I’m not funded?
Please note that the awarding of TEALIGs is competitive. If your proposal is not funded this time, we encourage you to meet with a CTSE staff member to discuss it in more detail. We are happy to offer suggestions if you wish to revise and resubmit your proposal again in a different funding cycle.
