Student Information

You are allowed to attend the Commencement ceremony if you are completing your degree requirements during spring or summer 2019 and have a Pending or Complete program evaluation status. You must also achieve the required cumulative major (and minor, if applicable) grade point average, and minimum credit requirement. Specific graduation requirements based on degree and academic level can be found on the University Registrar’s office webpages:

Commencement regalia will be available during your allotted packet pick-up time. There is no charge for the standard commencement regalia, consisting of a cap, gown, hood, and black tassel. Bookstore staff will be on-hand to distribute regalia and help with any regalia related questions.

  • If you ordered your regalia in advance, show the bookstore staff your ID and your packet
  • If you did not order your regalia in advance you will still be able to obtain regalia by providing your height and lineup card along with your packet and ID

The bookstore will also have an assortment of frames and international stoles for purchase. These items are also available in the bookstore at 120 Tremont Street.

Sawyer Business School Speakers

Two graduating students—one representing the undergraduate class and the second representing the graduate class—will present brief remarks (3–4 minutes in length each) at the Sawyer Business School Commencement ceremony.

To be eligible, you must be:

  • a graduating student who has completed all degree requirements by May 10, 2019 (Petitioners are not eligible.)
  • in good academic standing
  • willing and able to represent your Sawyer Business School graduating class at a dinner on the evening of May 18, the day before the ceremony, with the University President, Board of Trustees, administrators, and donors.

How to Apply

Submit your resume and a draft of your Commencement remarks to Colleen Cacchiotti by Friday, April 5. Please include your student ID number and your major or graduate program in your email.

Auditions

Student speaker auditions will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 12:15 p.m.–1:30 p.m. for undergraduate applicants and Tuesday, April 23, from 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. for graduate applicants.

College of Arts & Sciences Speakers

One graduating student will present brief remarks (3–4 minutes in length) at the College of Arts & Sciences Commencement ceremony. To be eligible, you must be:

  • a graduating student who has completed all degree requirements (including incomplete grades) by May 10, 2019. You are not eligible to apply if you have coursework to complete beyond the spring semester.
  • in good disciplinary standing and have a strong academic record
  • willing to work closely with the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office to refine and practice your speech
  • willing and able to represent College of Arts & Sciences graduates at a dinner on the evening of May 18, the day before the ceremony, with the University President, Board of Trustees, administrators, and donors.

How to Apply

Fill out the application form below and submit the following documents to the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office via Qualtrix:

  1. A complete draft of your speech (2–3 double-spaced pages). This should be personal, engaging, and able to appeal to an audience of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administrators, and guests
  2. Your resume
  3. A copy of your unofficial transcript—available on MySuffolk (Login and choose Classes & Registration -> My Grades & Academic Profile -> Unofficial College Transcript)

The deadline for undergraduate and graduate student speaker applications is Monday, April 1, 2019.

Auditions

After reviewing applications, a selection committee will invite several finalists to audition by delivering a draft speech. Audition specifics (date, time, location) will be announced at a later date.

Please note: Students may apply for both Commencement Student Singer & Student Speaker however they will only be allowed to accept one of these positions.

College of Arts & Sciences & Sawyer Business School Student Singers

One graduating student—undergraduate, graduate, or PhD—will sing the National Anthem at the start of each school’s Commencement ceremony.

To be eligible for consideration as the student singer at either the CAS or SBS ceremony, you must:

  • Complete all degree requirements (including incomplete grades) by May 1, 2019. You are not eligible to apply if you have coursework to complete beyond the spring semester
  • Have a strong academic record and be in good disciplinary standing with the University
  • Agree to work with a faculty member “coach” to refine the song, presentation, and style for one or more rehearsals
  • Attend a sound-check/rehearsal on Saturday, May 18, at the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion

Auditions

After reviewing applications, the Performing Arts Office will contact applicants who meet the criteria to arrange audition appointment with the selection committee on Thursday, May 2 between 12:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m. You will audition and respond to committee questions about your qualifications, your interest in being selected, and your overall learning experiences during your years at Suffolk. Selection of the singer will be based on quality of vocal ability, quality of presentation, academic record, and contributions to campus life.

The selection committee will be composed of representatives from the Performing Arts Office and the University community.

The auditions and final performance will all be sung a cappella (without accompaniment).

An Apostille is a certification issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that verifies the authenticity of a public document being presented to a foreign country that is a signatory to the Hague Convention of 1961. Students who wish to study or work outside of the United States may be required to have their educational credentials validated through the Apostille process.

Upon request, the University Registrar's Office will authenticate, notarize, and make available the Apostille process to any student who may need to have her/his diploma and/or official transcript certified. Please allow up to two weeks for your request to be processed. To request an Apostille, please complete and return an Apostille Process Request form [PDF] to the University Registrar's Office. If requesting an Apostille seal for a diploma, the Duplicate Diploma Request form [PDF] must be submitted along with the Apostille request.

The cost for Apostille service is $25.00 for up to two documents and $6.00 for each additional document, plus the cost of the transcript ($5.00 per copy) and or replacement diploma ($10.00 per copy). Credit or debit card is the preferred payment method and payments can be processed through the on-line payment form. The University Registrar's Office will also accept payment in the form of cash, check, or money order. If paying by cash, check, or money order, your request form and payment can be mailed to the address below:

All payments are due in advance; requests will not be processed until payment is received.

Diplomas for students will be printed with the student's name as it appears on their official university records. Diploma names may be changed free of charge, provided the name change form [PDF] is submitted to the University Registrar's Office prior to degree conferral. The university does not list credentials and titles on diplomas.

Diplomas for students completing their degree requirements in May are distributed immediately following the commencement ceremony. Diplomas are mailed within two weeks of the September and January conferral dates to the mailing address on file.

Students who have any outstanding financial obligations to the University at the time of degree conferral will not have their diplomas released to them. Please contact the Office of the Bursar for information regarding tuition accounts.
