About Mohammad Jahanbakht

I am a PhD candidate in Technological Change and Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Concurrently, I am enrolled in the CMU-Portugal dual degree program, which is affiliated with Catolica School of Business and Economics, Portugal. I am also a visiting scholar at Ivey school of business and economics and a fellow of Center for International Relations and Politics at CMU. My PhD thesis focuses on the role of entrepreneurs and institutions in the development of the mobile telecommunication industries across Africa. In summer 2012, I worked as a PhD intern at the World Bank’s Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship unit within the Financial and Private sector Development network. My research at the bank focused on examining the influence of individual characteristics on the propensity to becoming entrepreneurs of necessity and entrepreneurs of opportunity. Prior to enrolling into the Ph.D. program at CMU, I worked as a design engineer in the Silicon Valley. I received an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University
