Student Worker Job Description

The John J. Moakley Law Library is accepting applications for motivated, detail-oriented student library workers. As a circulation/reserve student worker, you will regularly assist a diverse community of library patrons; we seek applicants with strong customer-service skills. This job does not require library experience, but a familiarity with library settings will serve you well! Hours may include nights and/or weekends.

: Law Library Circulation/Reserve Student Worker

Hourly Pay Rate: $17.25

Job Responsibilities:

  • Understand and effectively communicate Moakley Law Library policies and procedures.
  • Answer patron queries at the Circulation/Reserve Desk both in-person and on the phone.
  • Use Sierra, the library’s Integrated Library System, to complete tasks including but not limited to checking materials in and out, searching for items in our collections, and placing holds on items.
  • Use the library’s catalog effectively to assist patrons and library staff.
  • Assist with the study room reservation system including helping patrons locate empty study rooms, assisting patrons with checking into their rooms, and occasionally unlocking rooms for patrons upon request. 
  • Retrieve reserve items for patrons and shelve books and other materials using the Library of Congress's Call number system.
  • Complete routine shelf maintenance such as straightening, shifting, and shelf-reading materials.
  • Depending on assigned shifts, student workers may be responsible for opening and closing the library without full-time staff. Our regular hours are: Mondays - Fridays: 8am-11pm and Saturdays & Sundays 9am - 11pm. 
  • Assist patrons with printer and scanner issues.
  • Refer reference and research questions to the Research Desk.
  • Notify the Circulation Supervisors of any problems or issues related to the daily operation of the Moakley Law Library including but not limited to missing items, technology issues, facilities issues, and problems at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.
  • In conjunction with colleagues and full-time staff, conduct hourly headcounts to note the number of patrons in the space and check for facilities and security issues. 
  • Help full-time library staff with miscellaneous tasks, special assignments, and longer-term projects as assigned
