Curriculum
Students in the LLM in LIT program will learn innovative new methods for delivering legal services. Through cutting-edge coursework and hands-on training, they will acquire the knowledge and skills that the legal industry increasingly expects and demands. They can also choose from a robust menu of courses that explore the modern business of law and specific areas of technology at our downtown Boston campus and online.
LLM in LIT students must complete 24 credits of required and elective course work.
Core Courses
LLM in LIT students must take at least three (3) of the following four (4) core courses, totaling at least seven (7) core credits:
- Twenty-First Century Legal Profession (2 Credits)
- Process Improvement and Legal Project Management (2 Credits); and
- Legal Tech: Small Firm (3 Credits)
- Generative AI and the Delivery of Legal Services (2 Credits)
In the event a LIT LLM student elects to all four (4) of these core classes, one of the two (2) credits courses can count as a Law & Technology Elective Course.
Law & Technology Elective Course Requirements
Students must complete 10 credits from this course list:
- Artificial Intelligence & the Law (3 credits)
- E-Discovery Law (2 Credits)
- Emerging AI Regulatory Frameworks (2 Credits)
- Emerging Issues in Law, Information Technology and Transnational Business (2 Credits)
- Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and the Law (1 Credit)
- Online Dispute Resolution (2 Credits)
- Privacy/Data Security Requirements (3 Credits)
- Digital Evidence (2 Credits)
- Race, Ethical AI, and Cyber Civil Rights (2 Credits)
Innovative Approaches Elective Course Requirements
Students must complete 7 credits from this course list:
- One (1) course from the following options:
- Decision Making and Choice Management (3 Credits)
- Design Thinking for Lawyers & Business Professionals (3 Credits)
- Modern LPS: Innovation & Tech ( 3 credits)
- Four (4) additional credits from the following list:
- Business of Practice (2 Credits)
- Business Planning: Formation and Financing of Start Up Businesses (2 Credits)
- Law Practice Planning: Law As a Career and an Enterprise (3 Credits)
- Lawyers as Leaders (2 Credits)
- Problem Solving: Legal Writing and Research for Practice (2 Credits)
- Biotechnology Business & the Law (3 Credits)
* International students on an F1 Visa are limited to only one online course per semester and must also satisfactorily complete an additional required course, "US Law & Legal Reasoning”, in their first semester of the LIT LLM program. The "US Law & Legal Reasoning" course credits are included within the required 24 LLM credits and will take the place of a 2 credit elective course within the LIT LLM curriculum.
Note that some elective courses may only be offered certain semesters or as Winter Intersession courses, and offerings may change from year-to-year. Please plan accordingly.
LLM EXTERNSHIP
Full-time LLM students are required to complete one LLM Externship or the full-year LIT Clinic or ODR Innovation Clinic as approved by the Faculty Director and an Associate Dean. Part-time LLM students are strongly encouraged to complete one LLM Externship or Internship. This requirement for full-time LLM students is subject to waiver on a case by case basis at the discretion of the LLM in LIT Academic Director.
